Dear Skalleagues & Friends of Skal
We wish to share with you our recent actions as part of our Skal Mission, and our social responsibility, which can be recapitulated as follows:
- Skal Mauritius had initiated the selection of a student for a Scholarship Award in August 2007. We have processed several applications and our Selection Panel chose Mr Kumar Appiah, who spent a few weeks training at a five star hotel in Bangkok, the Chao Phya Park Hotel. Our host, the General Manager Mr Andrew Wood, who was also the Director Membership of Asia, has overviewed the process in Bangkok to ensure its effectiveness and success. Kumar came back to us well prepared to face his future career in the Industry.
Skal Asia is actively setting up a permanent structure to sustain the Scholarship Initiative, and extend it to the Region. At the last Skal Asian Area Congress held in Incheon Korea in May 09, we have elected a full time Director of Young Skal & Scholarship Exchange at the level of the Executive Committee of Skal Asia, namely Dr Andrew Coggins from Hong Kong, who will structure this activity on a sustained basis.

The events unfolding in Haiti, following the earthquake on Tuesday 12 January 2010 have been described as apocalyptic by those rescue workers on the ground with possibly hundreds of thousands of people dead and up to one million people injured or rendered homeless.
In a situation like this one has the feeling of helplessness and there is very little that any of us can do in any physical or material way to help relieve the stress caused by this situation. Nevertheless as a caring society we must do what we can to help and one of the ways we can help is with contributions.
The Executive Committee of Skål International has set up a Haiti Relief Fund and kindly requests Skål members and non-members all over the world to contribute what they can towards this terrible disaster.
